Gally - Gunnm
It's octopus lips herself, Gally! or Yoko for her real name... or Alita for .. why did they rename her for the English translation? It create a few huge plot holes (like she is named after Ido's dead pet MALE cat... sigh) [they changed WAY too many names in the translation ¬_¬)

Anyway, Hyper Future Vision - Gunnm (Gundream) was a Cyberpunk comic by Yukito Kishiro (who, as can be told by reading the comic, is a Blue Oyster Cult fan. as anyone with musical taste is) and was renamed 'Battle Angel Alita' for some reason outside of Japan. There was a good Ps1 game (never officially translated) released during it's original run which follows his original idea for the ending of the series, but when the comic was stopped early, he gave it a bit of a weird-ish ending.. he didn't like this though, and later expanded on it with 'Last Order' and later a kinda flash back series detailing her past.

There was a two part OVA which was... okay BUT had huge plot hole problems (part of which was probebly due to the comic being in progress at the time) which made it impossible to fit into the original comic story (also, it made Gally dumber and introduced a character who didn't make much sense..)

They claim the USA made a film... it has no connection what so ever.
